“Ladies Day on the Lake” was held from 9:00 a.m.
to 3:00 p.m. on June 17, 2008 at Lighthouse Marina, 1925 Johnson’s Marina
Road, Chapin, SC. The Lake Murray Association (LMA), SC Department of
Natural Resources, Lake Murray Power Squadron and Columbia Power Sports
hosted this popular annual event.
The purpose of Ladies’ Day is to instruct
women about all the elements of safe boating, including how to drive and
dock a powerboat safely, back a boat trailer into the water, launch and
retrieve a boat. Each participant had the opportunity to get into a DNR
boat to take her turn operating it on the open water and to dock it at the
marina. This was done under the competent and patient guidance of the DNR
instructors. These were just some of the activities for this fun-filled
day! A course in the safe operation of personal watercraft was also offered
this year. There was also a safety program presented by two members of the
Columbia Power Squadron.
The DNR instructors are experienced specialists in
watercraft operation and safety. They took the “mystery and frustration”
out of boating and trailering for the ladies. They also taught the ladies
how to handle a boat and trailer confidently so that their boating
excursions would be safe and enjoyable. LMA representatives provided lunch
and refreshments and assisted in coordinating the day’s activities.
The participants this year described the
event as one of the most fun-filled and pleasurable activities they have had
on the lake. You could ask all of those “dumb” questions that you hesitate
to ask before and no one would laugh at you. No husbands or boyfriends
were allowed – this day was for the “Ladies Only”!
We look forward to next years Ladies Day on
the Lake because we feel that this is an important program that is
specifically designed for Ladies. We will announce early next year the
dates for the 2009 program. Be sure to keep checking this website for the
announcement. Remember, register early as this event fills up quickly.
